Residential Life

From its founding, Hampshire College has been designed as a residential learning community. Our residences provide:

  • a dynamic, intellectual learning environment
  • safe, comfortable housing
  • support to students in balancing the rights of individuals with the responsibilities of community membership
  • encouraging students to assume community responsibility, to learn to appreciate people with diverse backgrounds and lifestyles, and to make connections between the learning that takes place inside and outside of the classroom

The five residential living areas are administratively managed by four house offices.  Click here to learn more about our professional house staff. Trained students, known as "interns," assist these professional staff in providing a variety of services for residents of the Houses.

House offices also lend or provide a variety of items to improve the quality of campus living including some cleaning supplies, vacuums, games, hand carts, trash bags, toilet paper, etc. Check with each house office for availability and procedures.

House Names

Hampshire's mods — Prescott, Enfield, and Greenwich — are named after three of the towns flooded in the 1930s and 1940s for the Quabbin Resevoir.
